The
Material Safety Data Sheets are part of the Federal Hazard Communication
Standard. This regulation is administered by the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA) under the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of 1971 with its amendments. The purpose of the Hazard
Communication Standard is to provide information to people who may
be exposed to hazardous materials in their jobs. The MSDS also contains
information required to comply with various Federal and State regulations
in a written form.
Chemical
manufacturers and importers are required to obtain or develop a
material safety data sheet for each hazardous chemical they produce
or import. Distributors are responsible for ensuring that their
customers are provided a copy of these MSDSs. Employers must have
an MSDS for each hazardous chemical which they use.
