The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is part of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Canada's hazard communication standard,
which came into effect on October 31, 1988 and was revised in 2015 and amended in 2017.
This regulation with its amendments is administered by the Health Canada.
The purpose of the WHMIS is to ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported or used in workplaces are evaluated,
and that information concerning their hazards is transmitted to affected employers and employees who may be exposed to hazardous materials in their jobs.
The SDS also contains information required to comply with various federal and provincial statutes and regulations in written form.
Chemical manufacturers and importers are required to obtain or develop an SDS for each hazardous chemical they produce or import.
Distributors are responsible for ensuring that their customers are given a copy of the SDS.
Employers must have an SDS for each hazardous chemical they use.
